An Introduction to Sue (the origins of Froggie)
From the moment she could walk, Sue felt at home beneath wide skies and whispering trees. Childhood days on her grandparents’ small holding were filled with quiet wonder, watching lambs and calves take their first shaky steps, and house martins stitching new homes beneath the eaves.
“Froggie” began as a playful nickname when her aunty peered into her pram and laughed at the baby with frog-like legs kicking at the air. The name stuck, and the spirit of it, playful, curious and full of life still shines through in everything she does.
Fast forward a few years to 1985, when Sue spent six unforgettable months on the Isle of Rum, volunteering for the Red Deer Research Project. She still remembers the rhythm of the island: the hush before a calf’s first breath, the thunder of the autumn rut, an otter drifting by with a shellfish breakfast, a recently released sea eagle sweeping low overhead, and watching sunlit gannets diving against the dramatic dark clouds with a rainbow framing the scene.
Her love of the Pentland Hills began with early walks from Bonaly alongside her father, and it never left her. Today, as a lifetime member of the Friends of the Pentlands, she still celebrates each birthday among those rolling hills, listening for cuckoos and curlews calling through the heathered air.
Photography
Her first camera famously melted in the back seat of the family car during a sun-soaked holiday in Skye when she was seven, proof that her fascination with capturing the world’s beauty began early. Yet she doesn’t think of herself as a photographer.
“Nature is wonderful,” she says, “I just notice its beauty and sometimes get lucky enough to catch it.”
Fussy in the best way, she began turning her favourite images into handmade greetings cards because she could never find quite the right one in the shops. Those homemade creations eventually became Lavender Froggie’s Arts, a heartfelt collection of nature’s quiet magic to share with others.
For Sue, taking photographs is a form of mindfulness: a gentle way to lose herself in the living landscape and sometimes return with a small miracle in the form of a photograph. Each picture becomes a pause; each card, a chance to share that stillness with someone else.
Family and friends remain the heart of it all. Sharing her love of nature with them, and now with everyone who visits this little corner of peace, is, as she says, “the icing on the cake.”
Froggie’s cards have become a bit of a family tradition, and one we would love to share with you.
